FORT COLLINS, Colo. --- California Baptist University's women's golf team closed out the final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Tuesday, as the Lancers climbed a field-best five spots to finish tied for fourth out of 13 teams.
After Monday's ninth-place performance of 306-306=612, the Lancers were red hot during the final round, posting a 3-over-par 291. The 3-over-par team score was the second-lowest in the last day, as the University of San Francisco edged the Lancers by one stroke with a 2-over-par 290.
New Mexico State claimed the team championship with a 298-291-301=890 team score. Host Colorado State finished in second with a 306-293-296=895, and San Francisco rounded out the podium with a 303-304-290=897. The Lancers tied with the University of Wyoming for fourth place with a 903 team score.
"I'm very proud of the fight and heart that this TEAM showed today," said Coach Marc Machado. "This is a positive step that should help these ladies to start believing in their potential and their mental toughness."
The five-spot climb was a total team effort, as the Lancers tied with Northern Colorado for a field-best 14 birdies on the day.
Sofia Chabon recorded the first top-10 finish of her young career, moving up three spots in the final round with a 5-over-par 75-73-73=221 to lead the Lancers. Chabon put together a round with three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars.
"Sofia has tremendous talent and so much potential," added Machado. "She is very mature, and I know that she will do big things for this program. I'm excited to watch her grow this year, and it's just a matter of time before she realizes how talented she is."
Jocelyn Chee made the biggest leap up the leaderboard, as the junior team captain jumped up 18 spots to finish T-22nd. Chee signed a 78-79-70=227 and completed the final day with a team-best five birdies.
"Captain Chee bounced back like I knew she would by shooting two-under on her final round," said Machado. "She is resilient and really showed her leadership today."
Samantha Martirez joined Chee at T-22nd, shooting a 78-75-74=227 to move up nine spots. Martirez had one of the better finishes for the Lancers, finishing her last six holes at 3-under-par.
"Sam's attitude really improved every round, and her maturity showed," Machado said. "She wasn't hitting the ball well but managed to fight for us, especially on the last two rounds."
Diana Araneta also moved up the leaderboard to finish T-29th with a 75-79-74=228 on the card, while Aya Enkoji shot an 82-80-84=246 to place T-68th.
"I'm proud of Diana for making it into the lineup and showing that she belongs," said Machado. "All three of her rounds counted and she played her last four holes nicely at two-over cumulatively. Aya started out very poorly today on her front nine, but really bounced back to play her back nine at even-par."
Lexi Perry of Boise State won the individual medalist honors with a 1-over-par 72-72-73=217.
The Lancers will take a break before they get back on the course at the NM State Aggie Invitational on Oct. 7-9 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
