SEATTLE -- California Baptist University traveled to the Pacific Northwest to open up the Western Athletic Conference portion of its schedule against the favorites in the preseason poll, the Seattle University Redhawks.
When these two teams met last year, CBU walked off the field with a statement win, but tonight it was SU claiming a 2-0 victory.
Seattle was voted by the WAC coaches in the conference preseason poll as the likely 2019 WAC champions, receiving five of the 11 possible first-place votes.
The initial 45 minutes began slowly with both teams turning the ball over and looking unsettled. Each team had taken just one shot 10 minutes into the match, but shortly after that, the center official called for a penalty kick after a minor tussle in the box, a foul for which no card was shown.
CBU goalkeeper Albert Escuin guessed correctly and nearly got to the shot, but there was enough power behind it to sneak it into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Lancers would get the ball into a few challenging spots, and forced Seattle into making two saves before halftime.
The best chance CBU had in the opening half came off the foot of Reuben Dass. He made a run into the 18-yard box and found himself unmarked. His shot beat the SU goalie, but a Redhawks defender standing on the goal line deprived Dass of the equalizer.
The Redhawks would extend their lead in the 38th minute when a shot off a corner kick was blocked by Escuin, but rebounded and tucked into the goal by a waiting forward on the far post. The goal would put Seattle up 2-0 going into halftime.
Escuin was back at work early in the second half, making a beautiful diving save off a free kick inside of the crease on the edge of the 18-yard box.
Escuin would flirt with matching his career high for a second time in as many games by notching nine saves tonight and a total of 19 this week.
Coach Coe Michaelson took positives away from tonight's game.
"This week was a real test, on the road against top-25 caliber teams and again tonight there were so many good things about our performance. Seattle has run some top teams off the field here, it's one of the most difficult places to play in the country, and yet that was a very tight game. So while we aren't happy to lose, we need to understand how close we are to being really good, and this means we need to be resilient and look to take the same approach in our remaining games that we did this week."
The Redhawks came into today's matchup having already played a daunting non-conference slate that included multiple top-25 teams in Washington (then #8), Indiana (then #2), Notre Dame (then #11), as well as a tough UC Santa Barbara team that tied with top ranked Stanford in double-overtime tonight.
The Lancers will return to Riverside next weekend to host their WAC home openers against Grand Canyon and UNLV on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Reuben Dass gets a free run in the box and beats the keeper, but is denied a goal by a Redhawk defender in the right place at the right time. #LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/em1Sn5kxvI
