MORAGA, Calif. --- A late-game comeback fell short for California Baptist University's women's soccer team on Friday, as the Lancers dropped a 2-1 match to Saint Mary's.
"We played well, really proud of the team's effort and mentality today," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Both of their goals came against the run of play from missed clearances on our part. We generated some excellent attacking moments. Unfortunately, we were not as sharp as we needed to be in front of the net."
The Lancers and the Gaels held tight for the first 30 minutes of action, as neither side allowed the other to feel comfortable.
CBU put pressure on the 'Gaels' backline, forcing three corners in the first period and a total of six shots.
The Gaels were able to take advantage of a miss clearance five minutes before half, as Jaylen Crim put SMC on top.
SMC led the Lancers at the break by one, 1-0.
Coming out of the break, the Lancers looked hungry to find the equalizer. Amy Aquino and Rola Badawiya were able to put shots on goal, but both were saved.
Rebecca Romero was able to beat her defender in the box, but her shot nearly missed as it bounced off the top of the crossbar.

The Gaels scored their final goal at the 66th minute to take the two-goal advantage.
Miranda Hald provided a spark for the Lancers 10 minutes later, though, as CBU was able to draw a free-kick. Hald lined up the free-kick and curved it into the top left of the net to give the Lancers a chance.

A slew of shots started to pile up for the Lancers, but none would slip past the Gaels' keeper.
CBU ended the game outshooting the Gaels, 19-11.
"With 19 shots, we hit the post five times and forced SMC's keeper to make some big saves," added St. Clair. "This is a game of inches, and unfortunately, the ball just didn't bounce our way today. Now we begin preparations for Sac St. on Sunday."
CBU will have a quick turnaround with a match against Sacramento State on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 12:00 p.m.
