Pitching Propels CBU to First Win

The Lancers gave up just four hits and did not allow a free pass via a walk or hit by pitch in a 5-1 win over Pacific. Both teams move to 1-1 on the year after the second game of the series on Saturday at Klein Family Field. The series between the Lancers and Tigers resumes Sunday with a 1 p.m. game and then ends Monday at noon.
Pope threw seven strong innings, giving up just four hits and one run, while working his way around three errors. Amrhein closed out the gem, throwing two perfect innings and striking out three in the eighth and ninth.
CBU held its own offensively, with 11 hits to the Tigers' four. Russell Stevenson went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, while Nick Plaia, Damon Keith and John Glenn all had two hits.WIN #️⃣1️⃣

Three-straight, two-out singles put CBU up 1-0 in the second inning. Plaia and Stevenson got things started and then both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Then Andrew Jurado clutched up with two strikes and brought Plaia home with a single through the left side.

Plaia was a one-man show in the fourth. He singled aboard, stole second and third and came home on a throwing error as he swiped third base to make it 2-0.

The Lancers pushed their lead to 4-0 with two runs in the fifth. Jurado led off with a walk and then scored a double to the fence in left center from Keith.

An error and sacrifice bunt from Plaia set the table for Stevenson, who doubled home CBU's fifth and final run for his third hit of the game.

CBU's pitching was assisted by several impressive defensive plays, including two double plays. One in the first and the next on an unassisted play from Plaia at second base in the fourth inning.
