RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University's men's golf team is less than a week away from teeing off the spring season at the Orange County Classic on Feb. 10-11.
The Lancers will have a busy spring, as the team will compete in six tournaments before ending the season at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The Orange County Classic is the first tournament on the docket for the Lancers, as UC Irvine will host the two-day event at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club.
CBU will enjoy a week break before hosting its own tournament at Goose Creek on Feb. 24-25. This marks the first time the Lancers will host The Joust in the DI era. The team last hosted this event in the 2017-18 season, where the Lancers won by eight strokes over a DII field of 20 teams.
"Our program is very excited to host our first D-1 event at Goose Creek at the end of the month," said Coach TL Brown. "We plan to crown two team champions. We will crown the traditional team champion, counting the best four scores each round, but also the all-five champion, where all five scores are counted for each round."
The Joust will be a tournament like no other, as three champions will be crowned after the round on Feb. 25. An individual medalist will be awarded, a team champion will be awarded, and then an All-Five Team Champion will be crowned. Most tournaments allow five golfers to compete, with only four counting scores going towards the team score. The third champion will have to count all five player scores to see who will be crowned the All-Five Team Champion.
A trip to Oregon is next on the list, as the Lancers will compete in Bandon, Ore., at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Mar. 8-10, hosted by the University of Idaho. The tournament will be hosted on the Pacific Dunes Golf Course, which is one of six courses located at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, and the most notable of the six. According to Golf Digest, the Pacific Dunes Golf Course is ranked at No. 17 in the top-100 best golf courses in the United States.
The Lancers will follow up the Bandon Dunes Championship with another historic tournament at The Goodwin on Mar. 26-28. The Goodwin has been around for over 50 years and will be held at the Stanford Golf Course.
The California road trips will continue with a two-day tournament at the Sandpiper Intercollegiate on Apr. 13-14 and a one-day tournament at the El Marcero Invitational on Apr. 20.
CBU will end its season at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Maricopa, Ariz., on May 1-3.
"Our goal will remain the same at the WAC Championships," said Brown. "We know our team score won't officially count, but unofficially we want to place top-three in the field. I'm excited about this season and to watch this team grow and get better."
