CBU Completes Sweep of Claremont Convergence
3/7/2020 5:02:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
CLAREMONT – California Baptist University finished off a perfect weekend at the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, with wins over two of the tournament hosts, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10-2) and Pomona-Pitzer (18-12).
It extends the Lancers' winning streak to seven games, and improves their record to 13-4 on the year. It also continues one of the program's hottest starts ever, as CBU is off to its best start since 2005 when it opened up 14-4.
Amy Branch had a stellar day for the Lancers, as she scored five goals and dished out four assists, which included a hat-trick against CMS. In game two, three players posted hat-tricks for CBU. Kira O'Donell led the way with her second six-goal game of the season, while Maddie Meza and Maddie Schwegler scored three goals each.
The Lancers put on a defensive showcase against the Athenas. CMS only scored twice in the game, with one of those goals coming on a penalty shot. It's just the 12th time CBU has held a team to two goals or less in the NCAA era, and the first time since 2018. Grace Ramirez tallied nine saves over three quarters of action, while Megan Rocha added three saves in one quarter.
As a team, the defense made it difficult for shots to make it to goal, with 14 steals and four field blocks at Axelrood Pool.
Vicky Ochoa gave the Lancers the lead early, scoring on a power-play chance just over a minute into the game. Branch and Maddie Schwegler both scored twice in the first half, as the Lancers took a 6-0 lead into the break.
In the third, Branch picked up the hat-trick and King Wisniewska scored one of her own on a counter attack. Megan Henry and Nicole Rhoads capped the scoring with goals in the fourth quarter.
Game two was an offensive showcase, with 30 goals combined, which tied for the highest-scoring game in the NCAA-era for the Lancers. CBU trailed for the first time this weekend against Pomona-Pitzer when the Sagehens grabbed the opening goal, but goals from O'Donell and Branch in the following moments put the Lancers on top for good.
It was never close from there, as CBU had eight different goal-scorers against Pomona-Pitzer to put together the offensive onslaught.
The Lancers open up Golden Coast Conference play next at Santa Clara on Thursday, March 12. Seven of CBU's last eight matchups are GCC contests, with CBU hosting the conference Championships April 24-26 at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
