RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's water polo built on its best-ever preseason ranking by securing the best ranking in program history on Thursday.
The Lancers moved up from No. 11 to seven in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Week One Top-10 rankings. The move to a National Top 10 by the CWPA, as opposed to the usual 20, was due to the quantity of NCAA programs competing during the Winter 2021 season.
Stanford remains No. 1, while USC, Cal and UCLA are all tied for second in the CWPA Top-10, respectively. Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount follow in fifth and sixth, while the Lancers sit in front of Bucknell, Navy and George Washington.
The previous best ranking for CBU was No. 11, which was done again this preseason after first being set in 2018. CBU opened the new year with a split doubleheader at Loyola Marymount, which improved to No. 6 in the rankings. The Lancers defeated the Lions 13-11 to conclude opening day on Jan. 23 after LMU won 13-7 at the Burns Aquatics Center.
Zach Lowery led CBU with six points (three goals, three assists) and did not lose a sprint over the first two games. It was a balanced scoring attack, with senior PJ McDonough, sophomore transfer Zach Zetz and true freshman Caleb Teraoka all tied with Lowery for the team lead in goals with three each. Fellow true freshman Matt Olsen turned some heads in his debut, as he drew 11 ejections and scored twice. Senior goalie Gabe Thorne finished with 19 saves in week one, as well.
The Lancers and Lions are scheduled to meet again for another doubleheader on Feb. 6 at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Game times are set for 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Due to 24 of a potential 50 NCAA programs competing at the end of the day on January 27, the Top 20 was diminished to retain the proportionality of the polling. Normally, a Top 20 would rank approximately 40 percent of all men's varsity teams – while ranking 20 of the current 24 programs would account for 83.8 percent of the teams. To retain proportionality, 10-of-24 teams (or approximately 41.7 percent of the competing programs) will be ranked with the remainder of teams receiving votes also being listed for comparison.
