Lancers' Offense Opens Season Hot in Victory over Life Pacific

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University volleyball made its much-awaited 2021 debut with a four-set win over Life Pacific on Friday afternoon in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers defeated the Warriors in the first-ever matchup between the two sides in four sets (25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 25-11). CBU served tough, with 11 aces, and posted a .400 attack percentage to secure the victory, as it starts the year at 1-0 and LPU drops to 1-3.
Christine Graf, Calissa Hoye and Sydney Marks paced the offense, as all three had at least 12 kills and hitting percentages at .435 or above. Graf led the way with a match-high 15 kills on a .583 percentage (15-1-24). Hoye finished with 14 kills on a .522 clip (14-2-23). Marks rounded out the group with 12 kills on a .435 mark (12-2-23).
Tesa Oaks and Paige Johnstone each tied for the match-high in aces with four apiece. Oaks added 12 digs and eight kills, while Johnstone finished with a team-high 16 digs.

Both Hoye and Leah Pease earned starts in their CBU debuts. Hoye, a graduate transfer from the University of Iowa, made quite the first impression with several thunderous kills, and really came alive in set three after the Lancers dropped the second game.
Pease, a sophomore Valpairaso transfer, started at setter and finished with 34 assists, while junior returner Hana Okuhara added 20 assists, two aces and seven digs.

CBU is set to make it WAC opener at Tarleton State on Monday and Tuesday. It will also be the first-ever meeting between the two. The Texans are in the first year of their transition to NCAA Division I after proving to be a strong competitor in Division II.
TSU was picked to finish tied for sixth in the WAC's preseason poll, tied with Dixie State and Seattle U with 21 points. Tarleton State won three Lonestar Conference regular-season titles in its history (2015, 17-18) and two tournament crowns (2014, 17), and qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs six years straight, from 2014-19. Tarleton State has 10 20-win seasons over the last 12 years and won the 2018 NCAA D2 Regional title. The Texans have been even better at home, with 119 home wins over the last 10 years and an .850 home winning percentage in the last decade.
