WBB Preview: Lancers Open WAC Play, Host Conf. Co-Favorites Utah Valley
1/4/2021 11:53:00 AM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – The 8-0 Lancers will put their perfect record on the line against the Preseason WAC Coaches Poll favorites Utah Valley in a back-to-back series in Riverside. The games slated for Friday and Saturday afternoon will be an early opportunity for the two conference favorites to see who will have the upper hand in the quest for the regular-season crown.
Despite not having played an official game since Dec. 19 against Cal Poly, the Lancers have moved up in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll to #22. Wins against four Big West schools, as well as Pepperdine from the West Coast Conference and San Diego State from the Mountain West, helped bolster CBU's resume and climb the ranks to their highest position yet.
The Lancers also hold the sixth-longest active win streak in the nation, winning 11 in-a-row dating back to last season. They also remain in the top-10 for team assists with 173, tied with Arkansas in the seven-slot, and rank third in Division I with 21.6 assists-per-game as a team; the Lancers trail only Baylor and UConn.
CBU's own Ane Olaeta continues to be the NCAA's assist-leader. Her 65 also leads the WAC by a big margin, 22 clear of the next highest total. Senior Britney Thomas is leading the WAC in rebounds per game with 10.0, and field goal percentage, shooting at a 67.4% clip.

The Lancers own a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 13-point win at home last year. The two teams split last season's series, each winning at home. This season each team comes into this conference-opening series with high expectations as the Lancers were chosen in the WAC Media poll to take the regular-season title while the Wolverines were picked to win the conference title in the WAC Coaches Poll.
Last year Georgia Dale averaged 13.5 points, four rebounds, and two steals against the Wolverines while shooting 55.5% from three-point land. Ane Olaeta went off at home against UVU, scoring 23 on 9-10 shooting while dishing seven assists.
CBU comes into the matchup with a distinct experience advantage, having played eight games while the Wolverines maintain a 2-1 record. Some bad luck may be to blame for Utah Valley's lack of competition, though, as they have had eight games postponed or canceled since Nov. 28, including contests against Utah, UNLV, and BYU.
UVU is led by Josie Williams, their top returning scorer from a year ago, who is averaging 15.3 points and eight rebounds per game through three games. Helping carry the load is Maria Carvalho, who is pouring in 10 points per game.
The Wolverines lead the WAC in three-point percentage (36.8% | 21-57) and free throw percentage (73.0 | 46-63), while the Lancers hold the advantage in scoring, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals.
