IRVINE --- California Baptist University started the second half of Western Athletic Conference play on Friday, as Morgan Witz delivered the game-winner in overtime over the NM State Aggies.
With the 1-0 shutout victory, the Lancers improve to 6-6-1 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. CBU moves into second place in the conference standings with 12 points, while Grand Canyon leads the WAC at 4-0-1 with 13 points. The loss drops NM State to third at 7-8 on the year and 3-3 in the WAC. The all-time record moves to 5-1 in favor of the Lancers and a perfect 4-0 when playing at home.
It was a complete offensive showing by the Lancers, as the home team recorded 25 shots in the 99 minutes of action, with 13 on frame. The Lancers' defense held the Aggies to eight shots, with four on frame.
Devyn Kelsey, Amy Aquino, Karley Weeks, Witz, Cora Jacoby, Jayden Ramirez, and Samantha Lopez all recorded two or more shots in the game. Kelsey led the crew with five on the day, four coming off set pieces.
After a scoreless 90 minutes and a shot count of 24-7, the Lancers only needed one shot in the first overtime to end the game.
Witz made a great run into the box and applied pressure on the Aggies' backline. A miss-timed kick put Witz 1-on-1 with the NMSU's goalkeeper, as she hit a perfect left-footed shot to the right side of the net for the game-winner. It marks her first collegiate goal.
