Lancers' Comeback Falls Short Against Dixie State

ST. GEORGE --- California Baptist University started its final road swing of the season on Thursday, as the Lancers' comeback fell short against Dixie State.

The Trailblazers were the first to score, as Kearney Hoggan opened the scoring with a goal in the 30th minute. Dixie State would find the back of the net right before the half, as a penalty kick was awarded.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, the Lancers went into the break outshooting the Trailblazers, 9-4.

The offensive surge continued in the second half, as the Lancers recorded 10 more shots to the Trailblazers' three.

DSU was able to extend its lead at the 54th minute on a Jill Bennett goal to the left side of the net.

The 3-0 deficit didn't slow down the Lancers, though, as they were able to breakthrough in the 63rd minute on a Karley Weeks goal.

The momentum started to swing and so did the Lancers, as seven minutes later, Amy Aquino used a well-directed header into the net off a Morgan Witz corner kick.

CBU fired shot after shot in the final 18 minutes but were unable to find the equalizer to extend the match.

Aquino led the Lancers' offensive attack with six shots, three on goal.

"This was not a consistent performance for us, a tale of two halves," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We did not start as well as we know we should have, which opened the door for our opponent to capitalize. At this level, any lack of focus or work, no matter how small, will get exposed - an important lesson for our young squad. We were much better in the second half, controlling the game. Our team fought back from a 3-0 deficit to bring it to 3-2. Unfortunately, we just ran out of time to find the game-tying goal. This is a 90-minute game, and we need to be more consistent in our next performance. We now turn our focus to UVU."

UP NEXT

The Lancers close out the Utah trip with a game against Utah Valley on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 12 p.m. (PST).
