RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer found itself in a second straight overtime game on Saturday, this time going the full 110 minutes to draw with San Jose State 1-1. Brian Gonzalez's second half goal tied the game up in the second half leading to CBU's record moving to 7-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. SJSU now holds a 5-5-2 overall record with a 3-1-1 WAC tally.
"After a slow start, I'm really pleased with the performance the team put in today. I think the whole group recognizes two clear things about this match. First, once we got going we really took it to them for about 80 minutes today. Second, given the chances we created we are really unfortunate not to walk away with a win. They are so good technically and loaded with experience, so the pressure we put them under was really impressive given it was our fourth game in nine days," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the match. "The reality is this game can be cruel, but the attitude and the effort was right, so there's nothing to criticize. We will be sharper with our finishing next time. They don't need that criticism from me because they know it already. We will win a lot of games if we continue to perform like we did once we got going today."
The first half saw the Spartans hold much of the possession, attempting to build from a defensive alignment. They would breakthrough in the 19th minute, scoring off of a corner kick that was knocked around in the box. The Lancers would get nine shots off in the first half, forcing three Spartan saves, but weren't able to convert, leading to a one goal deficit at the half.
The second half saw a more aggressive Lancer attack getting another seven shots off with two on frame. One of those was Gonzalez's fifth goal of the season, coming in the 61st minute, scoring from inside the 18-yard box from a Tete Vacas assist.
Despite both teams best efforts, regulation ended with both sides still knotted at a goal apiece, leading to the Lancers second overtime game in three days, and fifth on the year. The teams would combine for just a pair of shots in the two overtime periods with CBU saving one.
Senior Gage Rogers started between the sticks for the Lancers, saving four shots on the day, while the CBU offensive saw five Lancers with multiple shots led by Vacas' game-high six. Gonzalez's five goal tally is good for the second most on the team behind Bryan Iliohan who has nine, while the Vacas assist puts him in a tie for second most on the team with Chris Heckenberg, each with three.

The Lancers will have a full week to rest and prepare for a single game next Saturday against Dixie State. The two teams have played once already this year with CBU taking the non-conference bout by a score of 2-0. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Silverlakes Soccer Complex in Norco.
