Olaeta Sets New Assist Record In Overtime Win Over UC Irvine

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's basketball earned a huge bounce-back win in its home opener on Saturday, overcoming a late deficit to UC Irvine to win 93-88 in overtime at the CBU Events Center. The Lancers improve to 2-1 on the season with the sole lose coming in Corvallis to #15 Oregon State, while UCI drops to 2-2.
Senior point guard Ane Olaeta had a historic game, scoring 21 points, grabbing eight rebounds, nabbing four steals, and a blocked shot, all while dishing out a career-and-program record 17 assists. Her assist mark is the most by any Lancer basketball player in history, breaking her own record of 14, which was previously set against New Mexico in last season's WNIT win. Seventeen is also the number to beat now in the NCAA as Olaeta holds the most single-game assists in the nation against another Division I team, in either the men or the women's divisions this season.
Caitlyn Harper led all scorers with 22 points on 10-18 shooting while showing up as a defensive force by blocking four shots and adding one steal for good measure. Georgia Dale stuffed the box score against the Anteaters, dropping 19 points to go with eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal.
The final Lancer to reach double-figures was true-freshman Trinity San Antonio who had a brilliant home debut, scoring 10 points to go with three boards, and one assist, block and steal. In total, nine Lancers scored against UCI in a full-team effort, highlighted be a stingy Lancer defense that did not allow an Anteater three-pointer when it mattered most, in the fourth quarter or overtime.
A tied game at halftime saw UCI start to pull away in the third quarter after outscoring CBU 31-23 while shooting 63.2 percent from the field and forcing seven Lancer turnovers.
However, a 17-5 run by the Lancers at the end of the third quarter combined with the opening of the fourth, pulled CBU back within a single point. The 'Eaters held on to a sliver of a lead until CBU pulled ahead by one-point with 1:31 left to go in the game on a layup by Harper. UCI would earn a pair of free throws, converting just one, to force overtime.
Irvine scored first, but California Baptist scored often in the extra period. Dale (eight points) and Olaeta (four) combined to score all 12 of CBU's points on 5-7 shooting in clutch time.

The Lancers must now prepare for two games in two days as they travel to Moraga, Calif., to take part in the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic Tournament. Up first will be the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Nov. 26. CBU and UCSB are very familiar with each other having played three times in the past three years, with the Lancers owning a 3-0 record against the Gauchos.
The next day, CBU will face off with their second Power 5 opponent this season in Texas Christian University. This will mark the first ever game against a Big 12 team for the women's program. Both games are set for noon start times at Saint Mary's University Credit Union Pavilion.
