AMES – California Baptist University wrestling made its second out-of-state trip to take on 13
th-ranked Iowa State on Saturday in the Hilton Coliseum.
The Lancers had some impressive performances but ultimately fell to the Cyclones on a score of 39-0. Iowa State improves to 2-0 on the season after a 25-9 win over Army earlier Saturday, while CBU drops to 0-3 in duals this year.
Iowa State is a top team in the country after it took 13
th at the 2021 NCAA Championships and has seven wrestlers who are currently ranked in NCAA Division I (five of whom wrestled Saturday). ISU qualified eight wrestlers for the 2021 NCAA Championships and six of them have returned for 2021-22.
Christian Nunez was responsible for perhaps the Lancers' most impressive performance of the day against Zach Redding, who is ranked as high as No. 19 at 141 pounds. Nunez came out aggressive and nearly had two first-period takedowns that were completed either just off the mat or right after the buzzer sounded before he dropped a close 4-1 decision.
Josh Grant and
Devin Garcia were sharp for CBU at 165 and 125 pounds, respectively, on Saturday. Both gave up just an escape and riding time point in a 2-0 loss to Austin Kraisser at 165 and Corey Cabanban at 125.
Chaz Hallmark and
Hunter Leake produced the highlights for CBU. Leake dropped a 10-5 decision but came away with a heads-up reversal in the third period. Hallmark picked up two takedowns in his match at 149.
The Lancers will stay in Ames to take part in ISU's Cyclone Open on Sunday. CBU had nine top-six finishes at CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open on Sunday, Nov. 21, including 157-pound champion
AJ Raya and third-place finisher
Arick Lopez at 197.
