Four Lancers Finish Top-Three at Iowa State's Cyclone Open, Garcia Takes Gold

AMES – California Baptist University wrestling logged four top-three finishes at Iowa State's Cyclone Open on Sunday.
Devin Garcia gave the Lancers their second tournament champion in as many weeks as he won the 125-pound title, while Arick Lopez finished runner-up at 197 and AJ Raya and Caden Gerlach took third in their respective 157 and 184 brackets.
Josh Grant (165) and Louis Rojas (174) each took fifth place and Edison Alanis (141) gave CBU seven top-six finishers on the day. The Lancers will now prepare to take part in the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational next weekend on Dec. 3-4.
Garcia used a pair of wins to win his three-man bracket. He started with a victory by pin in 66 seconds against Caleb Fuessley, an unattached opponent from Iowa State. He finished the day with a 4-0 decision over Army's Jacob Staud for his fifth win of the season.
Lopez went 1-1 to secure the runner-up finish at 197. He overcame an 8-2 loss to Northern Iowa's Noah Glaser in the first round with a victory by pin in 1:37 against an unattached Caleb Button.
Raya bounced back from a first-round 13-3 major decision loss to Northern Iowa's Cayd Lara in his opener with four-straight wins to take third place. He pinned Iowa State's Lucas Bratland in 1:52 and then earned decisions over Northern Iowa's Kaleb Olejniczak and a revenge 5-3 win over Lara before defeating Jack Thomsen of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club with a 15-6 major for third place.
Gerlach picked up a 5-3 win over South Dakota State's Caleb Orris to take third place in his four-man bracket at 184.
Grant won two matches, including a 5-2 decision over Iowa State's Carter Schmidt, to take fifth place at 165. Alanis also secured a first-round win over Iowa State's Derrick Pendelton with a 2:41 pin to take sixth at 141.
