RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's water polo has secured the third seed for the 2021 Western Water Polo Association Championships.
The 18th-ranked Lancers finished the regular season with an 18-13 overall and 6-2 WWPA record to set a program record for conference wins in a season. A three-way tie for second place in the WWPA regular-season standings was created Saturday as CBU, UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount all had identical 6-2 conference records.
UC San Diego upset UC Davis, while CBU defeated Air Force and LMU beat Santa Clara on the final day of the WWPA regular season Saturday. Per conference bylaws, the three-way tie was broken by winning percentage against the highest-placed conference opponent. The Tritons secured the second seed by virtue of its win over UC Davis.
CBU took the third seed with the head-to-head win over the Lions, which leaves them in the four spot. UC Davis is the top seed and Air Force (5-3) will be the fifth seed.
A three-way tie for sixth place in the conference was broken by goal differential, which put Santa Clara at No. 6, Concordia at seventh and Fresno Pacific at No. 8. Biola will be seeded ninth in its first WWPA Tournament.
The Lancers will face Santa Clara in the opening round of the WWPA Championships on Friday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at UC Davis' Schaal Aquatics Center. The winner will play the winner of UC San Diego and Concordia game in the WWPA Championship Semifinals. CBU defeated the Broncos 11-10 at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Oct. 30.
The top-three seed is the best ever in program history. CBU's previous best seed for a full WWPA Championship was fourth, which happened three times in 2016, 2018 and 2019. The Lancers were seeded third coming into 2021 in the WWPA Preseason Poll.
