RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball started the 2021-22 season in a big way, defeating UC Riverside on the road in the Crosstown Showdown, 62-59.
Big contributions from Caitlyn Harper, Georgia Dale and Ane Olaeta gave the Lancers the edge over the Highlanders on Tuesday. The win pushes the Lancers' regular-season winning streak to 28 in a row dating back to February 29, 2020.
Harper led all scorers with 20 points while grabbing 10 boards and four assists. Olaeta kept pace with last season's assist average by dropping seven dimes to go with 18 points and two steals. Georgia Dale recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The Lancers got off to a slow start Tuesday night, shooting just 23.5 percent (4-17) in the first quarter and allowing the Highlanders to grab seven offensive rebounds. It led to an 18-10 UCR lead after the opening 10 minutes.
After shaking off the first-game rust, CBU stormed back in the second quarter, opening the period with a 15-4 run before forcing the UCR staff to stop the bleeding with a timeout. The Lancers would end the half up 32-28 after an improved shooting performance, going 8-16 (50%) in the second quarter.
Despite the big end to the first half by CBU, the game remained tight with leads being traded throughout the third quarter. The Lancers finished the period up by a point, 48-47, after closing with a 6-2 run.
The fourth quarter saw CBU build as much as a six-point lead, but it was a one possession game late in the contest. CBU ultimately took the win by shutting down UCR defensively, not allowing a Highlander field goal in the last two-and-a-half minutes of the contest.
As it was last year, the Lancer defense was a huge factor in the win. CBU held the Highlanders to just 30.4 percent shooting (24-79) shooting from the field and an even lower 11.8 percent (2-17) from beyond the arc. Points in the paint were lopsided as well, with CBU recording 40 points to the 26 from UCR inside the key.
UP NEXT
CBU will have a week to prepare and travel to Corvallis, Oregon, as the Lancers' next test will come at Oregon State. The Beavers made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season as an eight seed after finishing their conference season in fifth place in a loaded Pac-12 Conference.
