RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball and Saint Mary's opened up its series on Friday at Totman Stadium. Harrison Spohn and Chad Castillo led the Lancers with two-hit games, but it was the Gaels who took the game-one victory, 5-1.

Saint Mary's improves to 3-2 on the year, while CBU moves to 2-2. The Gaels and Lancers will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Totman Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

Castillo and Spohn both went 2-for-4 in the game, while CBU also got hits from Damon Keith and Chad Minato.

Defensively, the Lancers turned four double plays to hold Saint Mary's offense in check. CJ Masciel also had the highlight of the game with a nice run-saving play in the fifth inning.

With one out and a runner on second, the freshman made the stop on a hot shot at third and calmly made the throw to record the second out of the inning.

The Gaels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then extended their lead with a three-run homer in the seventh. CBU got on the board in the eighth after singles from Minato and Castillo and a passed ball.

Relief pitchers Spencer Bengard and Ryan Silva made their season debuts on Friday. Bengard, a true freshman, did not allow a run in one inning of work, while Silva retired the side in order on 12 pitches in the ninth, with two strikeouts to his credit.
