EDINBURG --- California Baptist University was unable to find the back of the net on Thursday, as the Lancers dropped a tough 1-0 final to UT Rio Grande Valley.
It marks just the second loss for the Lancers on the season, as they move to 9-2-2 on the year and 7-2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. As for the Vaqueros, they improve to 8-4-2 on the season and 5-4-1 in the WAC. The Lancers are one point behind Seattle U in the WAC standings with 22 points, while UTRGV is in fourth with 16 points.
CBU controlled most of the game when it came to possession and shots, as the Lancers outshot the Vaqueros, 15-10, and held the advantage on corners, 6-3. Karley Weeks led all players in shots on the day with six, while Rola Badawiya fired off three, and Amy Aquino poured in two.
The Vaqueros were able to play a ball into the box at the 84th minute, and Mari Liis Lillemae put a touch to the top right corner for the game-winner.
"We are certainly disappointed with the result but will take this opportunity to regroup and learn from this road result," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We controlled a majority of the game and created a number of chances to score. We just weren't sharp enough around the goal tonight. The margins are very small at this level, and it came down to which team could finish their chances. Asides from our opponent's one opportunity, Romy and our back four were very good again. We're a young team and will certainly learn from this and get better going forward."
UP NEXT:
The Lancers will face the Vaqueros on Saturday, March 27, at 10 a.m. for the two-game series finale.
