DAVIS – California Baptist University baseball secured its first series sweep of the season with a 6-5 win in its finale at UC Davis on Saturday.
Grady Tuohy, Damon Keith and Rory Smith all collected two hits for CBU, while CJ Culpepper recorded his third save of the season by recording the final four outs of the one-run game. Tuohy also drove in three runs, including the game-winner in his first start of the season.
The Lancers have now won four-straight games and improve to 6-4 on the season, while UC Davis slides to 3-7. The victory also secures career victory No. 597 for Coach Gary Adcock.
CBU opened the scoring with four runs in the second inning. Ulises Caballero drew a leadoff walk and scored on a John Glenn double. Harrison Spohn plated the Lancers' second run with a sacrifice squeeze, and then Tuohy drove in a pair with a single up the middle to make it 4-0.
UC Davis pulled within a run, 4-3, after scoring three runs on three hits in the third. The Lancers pushed their lead back out to two, 5-3, in the fourth. Smith led off the inning with a double and then came around to score on an error.
The Lancers threatened to blow the game open in the eighth when they loaded the bases with no outs, thanks to three-straight walks. Tuohy drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop, but the Aggies escaped without any further damage on a fluky double play.
One run was all CBU's bullpen would need. Relief pitcher Ryan Silva came on and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up a two-out single. Culpepper retired the first batter he faced with a flyball to right field that ended the eighth inning. He remained in the game in the ninth and got three-straight groundballs to end the game.
A total of six pitchers threw for CBU on Sunday. Matt Amrhein threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. True freshman Spencer Bengard earned his first win in the process, as well.
