DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference announced its 2021 men's soccer postseason awards on Monday, with eight California Baptist University Lancers earning all-conference honors.
Freshman defender Thomas Beecham secured the top honor for CBU, with an All-WAC Second Team nod. Seniors Reuben Dass, Tete Vacas and Chris Heckenberg, along with sophomores Jordan Lane and Bryan Iliohan picked up All-WAC Honorable Mention. Beecham also qualified for the All-WAC Freshmen Team with Luis Mueller and Antonio Gomez.
Those nine recognitions are by far the most for CBU in the Division I and WAC era, surpassing 2018's total of five nods.
All nine Lancers listed are first-time honorees, as Beecham is just the second Lancer to be named to a First or Second Team since joining the WAC in 2018. Beecham started every game for CBU and has been the anchor of a defensive line that led CBU to its highest regular season finish to date in the WAC at fourth place. He notched one goal on the season at Houston Baptist and assisted on the game-winner against Utah Valley in the season finale.
California Baptist led the conference with three All-WAC Freshmen Team honorees as Beecham, Mueller and Gomez highlight the bright future for the squad. Gomez led the team in minutes played with 1,130, edging out Beecham who totaled 1,094 minutes and the captain Heckenberg who clocked in at 1,089. Mueller led the team with 10 points in his debut season, recording four assists to tie Vacas for the team lead and also scoring three goals.
"I'm happy to see some guys recognized. I think there's a level of consistency we need to hit individually and collectively in order for a few guys to move up these lists this fall. As great as we were in some games, we had two or three games that probably cost us some additional accolades. I'm also thrilled to see some of our young guys recognized," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson. "I've had no doubt that we have the best young talent in the conference, and it's nice to see that sentiment vindicated. There's a lot of fuel in here for this fall as guys hit the offseason and we look to improve upon our fourth-place finish."
