ST. GEORGE – California Baptist University baseball opened its Western Athletic Conference series at Dixie State on Friday, with the Trailblazers taking the game on a 3-1 score.
Chris Burica turned in another strong start on the mound for the Lancers. Ulises Caballero provided CBU's one run with a solo home run, while Chad Castillo had a two-hit game for the Lancers.
Nevertheless, Dixie State got the win as CBU moves to 19-10 and 11-2 in conference. The Trailblazers improve to 10-20 and 8-0. The Lancers' lead in the WAC standings was unchanged, thanks to second place Sacramento State losing on Friday, as well. The Hornets are now tied with Grand Canyon for second in the conference with identical 13-4 league marks, while NM State is in fourth at 9-8.
Burica pitched through the seventh inning for the seventh time in his nine starts this year. He held DSU to the three runs on eight hits, two walks and struck out five.
