Seniors Lead the Way in Lancers' Win over Concordia in Final Home Game of 2021
4/2/2021 3:26:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
The 18th-ranked Lancers got big contributions from their seniors to pull out the win, as they featured a nearly all-senior starting lineup. It was junior Jamie Hutton who led the way, though, with three goals, an assist and four steals. It is Hutton's fourth hat trick of the season and ninth of her career.

CBU improves to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the Golden Coast Conference with this win. Concordia drops to 1-4 on the year and in the GCC.
Goalie Kyra Foley saved her best for last, as she set a career-high with 13 saves and also added an assist on her senior day. One of her blocks came on a penalty save in the fourth quarter.

Fellow seniors Madison East and Amy Branch put together big games, as well, with three points on a goal and two assists each. Senior Megan Henry scored a beautiful goal and added an assist, senior attacker Nikkol Webber added an assist, steal and drawn ejection. Senior Krista Krantz added a steal and won four sprints, too.

Junior two-meter Vicky Martinez gave CBU a strong presence down low with two goals and a drawn exclusion.
CBU got off to a strong start by scoring the first three goals of the game, thanks to East, Hutton and Branch. Concordia managed to keep it a three-goal game, but a 3-1 run fueled by goals from Hutton, Martinez and Maddie Schwegler gave the Lancers an 11-6 lead with 6:34 to play.
The Lancers went deep into their bench from there, which allowed Concordia to whittle down the deficit in the final minutes.

CONFERENCE OUTLOOK
Friday's win keeps CBU's hopes of a top-four finish and berth to the GCC Championships alive and well. The Lancers are currently in fifth place in the GCC and has played one less game than most of the conference.
Pacific holds the lead in the conference standings and 5-0 in league play, while Fresno State and San Diego State are tied for second at 4-1. Loyola Marymount is in fourth place at 3-3 and has yet to play Pacific in its final conference game.
Azusa Pacific trails CBU in sixth place at 2-3 in the league, while Concordia (1-4) and Santa Clara (0-5) round out the final two teams in the conference standings.
A three-way tie for fourth place in the GCC standings would be created if CBU wins one of its final two regular-season games, and if Azusa Pacific can defeat Concordia in its season finale. The Lancers, Cougars and Lions would all be even at 3-3.
CBU would hold the tiebreaker, which is based on margin of victory between those three, in that scenario. The Lancers defeated Azusa Pacific 15-9 and lost to LMU 11-10, which gives them a five-goal margin of victory. APU has a minus one margin of victory after its 12-8 win over LMU and six-goal loss to CBU, while the Lions have a minus three goal margin of victory with their loss to the Cougars and one-goal win over the Lancers.
SENIOR DAY
It was the final home game for senior goalie Grace Ramirez, in addition to East, Branch, Henry, Webber, Krantz and Foley on Friday. Ramirez is a two-time NCAA All-American and All-GCC selection. She ranks fourth in CBU's all-time history and second in the NCAA era with 642 career saves. Her 131 steals rank second in the Lancers' career history, as well. Branch ranks 12th in CBU's NCAA-era record book with 49 goals scored.
