RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's soccer continues to reap rewards of a great season, this time in the form of senior captain Chris Heckenberg and freshman defender Thomas Beecham being honored with United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-Far West Region distinctions. The awards mark the second and third such honors for the Lancer squad as Preston Judd became the first to receive the title in 2018.
The two started all 12 games for CBU this season, with Heckenberg sporting the captain's armband in each one from his center-mid position while Beecham was anchoring a stout Lancer defense from his center back station. The two averaged over 90 minutes of playing time per game this season, providing not only great play, but reliability as well. Beecham managed to record three points on the season, first scoring the opener against Houston Baptist on February 28, before assisting the game-winner in the season finale at Utah Valley on April 9.
"I'm thrilled to see these guys get recognized on a regional level. Thomas is one of the best young defenders in the country, and Chris is the kind of guy who does all of the little things for the team. You may or may not realize his impact after seeing him once, but the more you watch, the more you realize just how good he is," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the awards were announced. "We are very fortunate to have an all-region center back and an all-region central midfielder back to anchor an even stronger CBU squad this fall."
The USC honors now add to the Lancer trophy case for the spring 2021 season as Beecham had already earned Second Team All-WAC honors while Heckenberg had earned a WAC Honorable Mention nod.
