Lancers Capture First Win Of The Season Over Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO --- California Baptist University's women's soccer team captured its first win of the season on Sunday, as the Lancers held firm over the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals in a 1-0 showing.
It was a physical and aggressive game for the full 90 minutes, as the two teams combined for 33 fouls on the day. The Lancers were able to secure possession for most of the match with precision passing and a swarming defense.
With time winding down in the first half, the Lancers forced a corner kick after a Cardinal defender settled to kick it out of the end line. Danielle Gordon raised her hand and sent a ball into the box, finding Devyn Kelsey, who rose above the rest of the players to place a perfect header to the top right corner for the Lancers' first goal of the season. Â

The lone goal by the Lancers would prove enough, as Romy Salvador and the rest of the Lancers' defense held the line.
The Cardinals tested the Lancers' defense at the 68th minute, though, as a free-kick was awarded right outside the box. Salvador made a diving save to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard and secure her first shutout of the 2021 season.

Kelsey and Karley Weeks led the Lancers with two shots apiece, while Taylor Summit and Samantha Lopez both added one each.
The all-time series moves to 2-0 in favor of the Lancers, as they won the first-ever matchup against the Cardinals on Sept. 13, 2019, with the same 1-0 final.

The Lancers will finish their four-game road trip in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they will take on UNLV on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 12 p.m.
