IRVINE --- California Baptist University welcomed the University of Pacific on Sunday for the home opener, as the Tigers snuck away with a 1-0 victory.
The loss moves the Lancers to 1-4 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 4-1-1. They came into the weekend on a one-game winning streak after beating Fresno State on Friday, 1-0.
"This is a humbling result for our young squad," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "While we played well enough to win and showed good heart, our finishing wasn't as sharp as it needed to be. We narrowly missed the back of the net a few times and need to do a better job finishing our chances. We all know the margins at this level are very small. The difference in that game was a 2-second drop in focus that allowed a rushed set-piece goal just before the half. While the result is disappointing, we will watch the film, learn the lessons, and get back to work on the training field."
The two teams combined for 23 shots on the day, as the Lancers had two opportunities on frame that were saved by Tigers' goalkeeper Brenna Crump.
The lone goal of the day came in the final 10 seconds of the first half, as a corner kick was rushed inside the box and bounced around before finding the back of the net.
Karley Weeks and Ashley Humphrey both recorded the Lancers' two shots on goal.
