Lancers Grind Way to 75-73 Win Over Utah Valley
1/15/2022 10:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – A gritty, all-around effort led California Baptist University men's basketball to a nail-biting 75-73 Western Athletic Conference win over Utah Valley.
The Lancers did it shorthanded and got a season-high 28 points from Tre Armstrong on Saturday in the CBU Events Center. It brings CBU's record to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in WAC play, while UVU moves to 11-6, 2-3.
California Baptist did it all shorthanded, as it used just seven players in the game but got at least four points from each of them. The Lancers were hot from deep as a team, as they hit on 53 percent of their threes (8-15).
Ty Rowell was the hero late for CBU, as he broke a tie with 41 seconds left after knocking down a huge turnaround jumper to make it 72-70 Lancers. He finished with 16 points in the game and added three assists and three rebounds.
"Tonight, we competed with a lot of toughness and resolve," said CBU Head Coach Rick Croy. "It got really tough down the stretch and we didn't flinch."
Chance Hunter hit two free throws with 19 seconds left and Rowell added one with six ticks left to ice the game. Hunter ended the night with nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
Armstrong's 28 points came on hot shooting from deep and the free throw line. He was 4-of-5 from three, 10-11 from the charity stripe and had three steals.
Juhlawnei Stone gave the Lancers a jolt of energy off the bench with his defense and all-around play. He finished up with nine points on 4-5 shooting and added six rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
"These games are tough to close. The other team is swinging away and choppin', and you got to hang on and make good decisions," added Croy. "What a gutty performance by so many guys down the stretch."
WOLVERINES AT A GLANCE
Utah Valley is a quality team in the WAC and was picked to finish as high as fourth in the conference's preseason polls. The Wolverines' No. 100 spot in the NCAA NET Rankings coming into the game is third overall in the conference.
They have a number of highlight wins this season. They pulled out a huge, 72-65 overtime win over then 12th-ranked BYU on Dec. 1 and also defeated Washington (68-52), Pepperdine (86-74) and Long Beach State (84-78).
PLAY-BY-PLAY
CBU took its first sizable lead, 15-9, with a 9-0 run in the opening eight minutes. The Lancers led by as many as eight, 29-21, with 6:36 left in the first half as they hit on four of their six three-pointers in the opening period.
Nevertheless, the Wolverines came back to tie the game at 35-35 come halftime. The Lancers opened the second half on an 12-3 run to take a nine-point lead, 47-38, their largest of the game to that point. Four different Lancers contributed to run, which was highlighted by a dominant sequence from Stone.
UVU cut its deficit down to three, 47-44, but the Lancers responded with a 14-4 run that gave them a 13-point advantage, 61-48, with seven minutes to play. Armstrong had five points in that spurt while Stone had a big and-one play, as well.
The Wolverines came all the way back again to tie the game at 68-68 and 70-70 in the final 73 seconds. CBU did not panic and pulled out the win with execution down the stretch.
