Harper Takes Over Fourth Quarter As CBU Runs Away From Utah Valley
1/15/2022 3:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OREM – A spectacular game by Caitlyn Harper led to California Baptist University women's basketball's seventh-straight win over Utah Valley, 83-68, in the UCCU Center. The win gives CBU an overall record of 12-2 with a still perfect 3-0 record in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lancers have now won 20-straight regular season conference matches dating back to Feb. 29, 2020.
Harper scored a career-high 30 points in the win, outscoring the Wolverine team by herself in the fourth quarter when she exploded for 15 points compared to Utah Valley's 14. She did all of that damage on thin ice as she played the entire period with four fouls.
Tiena Neale was the only other Lancer to reach double-digit scoring, doing so by sniping from the three-point line, scoring all 15 of her points from distance. Neale has shot the lights out in Utah, going 10-13 against Dixie State and Utah Valley during this road trip. Ane Olaeta contributed all over the court, scoring seven points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists with a pair of steals.
The Lancers' quality shooting that started in the previous game against Dixie State carried over to Orem and CBU shot 51% (28-55) from the field and 50% (13-26) from outside, their best three-point mark of the season. Harper, Neal and Brittany Klaman did the bulk of the damage, combining to go 10-11 from downtown.
Harper's big game started early, cashing in 11 points in the first half, including a perfect 3-3 shooting effort from beyond the arc. Harper and Neale combined to go 6-7 from downtown in the first half, while Sydney Palma began contributing immediately in her first start of the season with six points and three assists. CBU would take an eight-point lead into halftime.
The Wolverines made a furious comeback late in the third quarter, shaving the lead down to one point with about two minutes left in the quarter. Eliana Bravington turned the tide with a three-pointer on her first touch of the game and the Lancers never looked back. The fourth quarter saw Harper go on her tear as CBU stopped Utah Valley from even stringing together two made field goals in a row.
