WBB PREVIEW: Lancers Take On Texas Duo in Home Doubleheader
1/18/2022 2:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball remained unbeaten in Western Athletic Conference play after winning three road games in five days.
The Lancers defeated Dixie State, Utah Valley and Seattle U to move to 4-0 in the WAC and 13-2 overall. The Lancers are currently on a 23-game conference win-streak, which is the third longest in the nation behind only UConn (129) and Princeton (29).
Despite the heavy workload required to play three games in five days, the trip was an all-around success for the Lancers. Offensively, CBU was way above its season averages in scoring -- from 75.7 points per game to 82.3, field goal percentage (42.8% to 47.4%), three-point accuracy (31.4% to 40.4%) and from the charity stripe (69.6% to 75.6%).
Caitlyn Harper and Ane Olaeta combined for 122 points on 52.9% shooting during the trip, accounting for just under half of the Lancers' 247 total road points. Harper, the reigning WAC Player of the Week, averaged 23.7 points during the three-game stretch, including a new single-game career high of 30 points against Utah Valley. Olaeta has increased her scoring average to 15.7 while still maintaining the best assist-per-game average in the nation at 7.8.

The Texans will arrive in Riverside with an 11-6 record on the year, but have been trading wins and loses in the conference schedule to reach a 3-3 tally. During their most recent weekend slate, TSU lost a defensive struggle against Grand Canyon 47-37 before taking the next game against Sam Houston State in Huntsville by the slimmest of margins, 62-61.
The win over Sam Houston came courtesy of Malaya Kendrick, who made two free throws with 32 seconds left on the clock and grabbed a game-clinching steal with three seconds left. Kendrick led the Texans with 18 points and nine rebounds in that game. She is second on the team in scoring with an average of 9.4 points per game while leading TSU in rebounding at 7.1 per game.
Tarleton has a stout defensive presence, leading the conference in blocks with 5.3 per game and fifth in steals at 9.3 per contest. However, the Texans are vulnerable on the offensive end, ranking in the bottom half of the league in field goals, three pointers and free throw shooting.

The Wildcats start the week with a strong 12-5 record overall and a 4-2 WAC record. ACU most recently defeated New Mexico State in Abilene, 76-73, after trailing by 19 points midway through the third quarter. They outscored the Aggies 22-8 in the final frame to remain undefeated in the all-time series against NMSU.
ACU made just one three-pointer in that game against New Mexico State, a statistical outlier from the WAC's leading three point team, leading the conference with 168 made from distance this season. The Wildcats managed to capitalize on what the Aggies handed them in the form of 21 made free throws throughout the game, another category in which ACU leads the conference.
Abilene Christian has four players averaging at least 9.2 points per game, led by graduate transfer Jamie Bonnarens who is cashing in 13.9 points per game. Bonnarens currently sits at No. 9 in terms of scoring average in the WAC.
