Leake's Ranked Win Highlights Lancers' Four Victories at Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS – California Baptist University wrestling put together one of its best team performances of the season in a dual at Air Force on Thursday.
Victories from Hunter Leake (133), AJ Raya (157), Frank Almaguer (165) and Caden Gerlach (184) highlighted the night, as the Lancers won four of 10 matches. The Falcons came into the dual with three ranked wrestlers and used six bonus-point victories, including three pins, to walk away with the 32-11 victory.
Leake was responsible for the most impressive win of the day – if not season – for CBU. The COVID freshman secured his first-ever win over a ranked opponent in Air Force's Sidney Flores, who is ranked No. 32 at 133 pounds in NCAA Division I.
After Thursday, three Lancers are tied for the team lead in win this season with 13 with Raya (13-7), Gerlach (13-8) and Chaz Hallmark (13-11). Air Force improves to 3-3 this season, while CBU is now 0-6 heading into a dual at Northern Colorado on Friday at 5 p.m. Pacific.
Leake came out on top in an exciting, early scramble for a 2-0 lead. He then rode out Flores in the second quarter to give him two minutes of riding time heading into the third.
Flores took a 3-2 lead with a two-point nearfall in the final period, but it was short lived as Leake worked a reversal a few seconds later and kept top position en route to the 5-3 win.
Raya and AFA's Giano Petrucelli went into overtime tied at 1-1. It was Rays' defense that helped earn him a 3-1 sudden victory, which kick started the Lancers winning three of the next four matches.
A second-period takedown was key for Almaguer securing a 5-3 decision over Trey Brisker at 165 pounds. Gerlach also won a tightly-contested, 6-5 decision at 184 pounds for CBU's fourth win on the day.
