CBU Wins Four Matches in Dual at Northern Colorado

GREELEY – California Baptist University wrestling put together another strong performance in Colorado on Friday night and won four matches in a dual at Northern Colorado.
Frank Almaguer (165 pounds), Caden Gerlach (184), Hunter Leake (133) and AJ Raya (157) all won their matches on Friday to finish the week a perfect 2-0 for CBU, but the Golden Bears came away with a 25-14 win, aided by a forfeit and two pins. Northern Colorado improves to 4-3 on the season while CBU is now 0-7.
Gerlach (14-8) and Raya (14-7) now lead the team with 14 win on the year. Almaguer and Leake's wins continued an impressive run for the duo. Almaguer improved to 8-2 this season and has now won three-straight matches and six of his last seven. Leake has won five matches in a row, seven of his last eight and is now 9-6.
CBU will wrestle three duals at home next week, starting with Senior Night against CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. The Lancers will then host San Francisco State and Life Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Almaguer secured a dominant 10-3 decision over UNC's Nick Knutson. Almaguer got two takedowns in the first period and stayed aggressive before finishing with four. It was revenge for Almaguer after Knutson pinned him at the Reno Tournament of Champions in his first weekend of action on Dec. 19.
Gerlach won a wild scramble early on in his match and then used the top position to secure his fifth pin of the season in the first period.
Leake used two takedowns to defeat Dyson Kunz, 6-2. Raya used an impressive four-point move and a late takedown to secure a 7-2 decision over Cody Eaton.
Despite losses, Arick Lopez put together a strong showing at 197 against a top-25 opponent in Alan Clothier. Heavyweight Christopher Island also dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Jacob Seely.
