RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University wrestling nearly pulled out the win over CSU Bakersfield on Senior Night, as it won five matches but ultimately came up a point shy of the Roadrunners, 20-19.
The Lancers won five-straight matches on Friday in the Van Dyne Gym from 133 through 165, thanks to Hunter Leake, Brandon Paulson, Chaz Hallmark, AJ Raya and Frank Almaguer. CBU moves to 0-8 in duals this season, while CSUB improves 2-6.
California Baptist's home campaign comes to a close with a pair of duals on Saturday against San Francisco State and Life Pacific at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, in the Van Dyne Gym.
Leake got CBU's five-match winning streak started with an impressive 4-2 sudden victory over CSUB's 14th-ranked Chance Rich at 133 pounds.
It was good for Leake's second ranked win in as many weeks after he defeated Air Force's Sidney Flores, who was ranked No. 32 at the time. Leake is now 10-6 this season, as he's won six-straight matches and eight of his last nine.
A pair of takedowns helped Paulson improve to 3-1 on the year with a 6-2 win at 141.
Hallmark had the biggest victory for CBU in terms of points, with a first-period pin. He was trailing Josh Brown, who came into the match with a 20-11 record, on a score of 4-1 before he took Brown on a wild ride. Hallmark notched a pair of nearfalls before finally locking up the fall with 41 seconds left in the first period.
Raya won his Senior Day match to give him sole possession of the team lead in wins this season with 15. He wrestled a tight match with Brock Rogers but put the exclamation point on his 4-1 win with a takedown in the final seconds.
Almaguer put on a takedown clinic, with a total of six takedowns in his 14-5 major decision victory. He's won four-straight matches and seven of his last nine to improve to 9-2 this season.
The Lancers also got a win from Marcus Peterson in an extra match. He defeated CSUB's Jacob Peralta 7-5 in overtime.
