YORBA LINDA --- California Baptist University opened the 2022 spring season with a win on Monday, as the Lancers captured the fourth annual SoCal Ryder Cup over Cal State Fullerton, 12-6.
It marks the second straight year the Lancers have claimed the Cup, as they won last year's match play event, 11-1.
"The 4th annual SoCal Ryder Cup was a TEAM success for us," said head coach Marc Machado. "We played well, encouraged each other, and showed unity. This event is meant to shake off the tournament nerves and prepare us for a successful spring semester. I'm very happy with the outcome and grateful that we do this fun and competitive event with Cal State Fullerton each spring."
The Titans hosted the one-day match play event at Black Gold Golf Course.
The front nine consisted of a two-team, best-ball match play, while the back nine showcased a 1-on-1 singles match play with six different groups battling each other. The format was set up for each match to be worth two points in both the team and singles play for a total of 18 points on the line.
The Lancers were dominant from start to finish, setting the tone for the day, taking all six available points in the two-team, best-ball event.
Belle Balkan and Jocelyn Chee teamed up as the Lancers' No. 1 and No. 2, winning their match 1-up. Haruka Shintani and Filipa Capelo were paired together at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, taking their match 2&1. Esther Lee and Sofia Chabon produced the most dominant result in the team event, going 4&3 to record the Lancers' first two points of the day.
The Titans secured the first two points of the singles match at the No. 1 spot, but Chee gave the Lancers another two points at the No. 2 spot, winning her match 3&2.
Shintani secured the Lancers' victory at the No. 4 spot, winning her match at 3&1. Chabon gave the team its final two points at the No. 6 spot with a 2&1 win.
The Lancers are back in action on Feb. 7-8 at The Valley Invitational, hosted by CSU Bakersfield & Cal Poly at the Bakersfield Country Club.
