RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball got the conference season underway, beginning with a 73-60 home victory over Chicago State. The Lancers improved to 10-2 on the season and keep their Western Athletic Conference win streak alive with their 18th win in a row.
Freshman Trinity San Antonio introduced herself to the league in a big way by recording career-highs in points (24), rebounds (eight), steals (four) and blocks (two) against the Cougars. Caitlyn Harper (15) and Tiena Neale (11) both broke double-digits in the scoring column while Britney Thomas earned a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in her first start of the season.
Ane Olaeta reached another major career milestone, using a layup in the middle of the third quarter to join the 1,500-point club. Olaeta finished the game with 1,503 points, now eyeing a spot on the top-10 scoring list, needing just 16 more to reach it. She would also record her fourth game this season with double-figure assists, dishing 12 of CBU's 20 dimes.
The opening frame started well enough for the Lancers, building a 9-2 lead courtesy of San Antonio who scored five straight points. Harper would finish the period with a pair of easy lay-ins to give the Lancers a 14-7 lead at the break.
Quarter number two saw the Lancers round into a more familiar form, opening on a 15-2 run through the first six minutes to build a 29-9 lead. The first 12 points were split evenly between Harper and San Antonio, efficiently getting it done in the field (3-3) and at the free throw line (6-6). CBU would take a 32-21 lead into halftime.
The second half was a turning point for the Lancers who improved their shooting from all over the court as they kept the Cougars at bay. CBU would force Chicago State into 21 turnovers on the day while also holding the WAC's second-leading scorer in Aaliyah Collins (16.1 ppg coming in) to her lowest scoring output of season with just five points.
