WBB Preview: Lancers Prepare To Host WNIT Game Against San Diego on Thursday
3/14/2022 12:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – The Women's National Invitation Tournament announced on Monday that California Baptist University women's basketball will host the University of San Diego on Thursday, March 17, at 6 p.m., in the first round of the 2022 WNIT Postseason Tournament.
The Lancers are set to take on the West Coast Conference's USD Toreros, hosting the opening round game for the first time since 2019. The Toreros finished the year with a 16-14 record, going 8-9 in conference play before bowing out in the first round of the WCC Tournament to Santa Clara, 86-79.
USD finished the year in sixth place in the 10-team WCC standings, but the Torero's led the conference in free throw attempts per game (19.1), showing their eagerness to play a physical brand of basketball. They also led the league in steals per game with 13.1, by far the most in the WCC.
Where the Toreros lacked was their ability to defend shooters, allowing the second-highest opposing field goal percentage in the conference at 43.2 percent. Despite leading the conference in free throw attempts, those were not guaranteed points for USD, as they shot just 67.8 percent from the charity stripe, also the second-lowest clip in the WCC.
Sydney Hunter led the team in scoring (11.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg), earning her a spot on the All-WCC First Team list. She was not the only USD player to earn accolades as teammate Jordyn Edwards received Defensive Player of the Year honors while also taking home All-WCC Honorable Mention status. Edwards led the WCC in steals-per-game with 2.6.
CBU'S WNIT HISTORY
Last season, the Lancers made a significant run in the WNIT, defeating New Mexico 90-85 to earn the program's first-ever WNIT win. They followed that up with a 90-82 victory over San Francisco, where the Lancers posted a WNIT single-game shooting record with a field goal percentage of 63.3% (31-49) against the Dons. The 26-0 dream season came to an end the next night as CBU fell to Rice, the eventual tournament champions, 79-55.
This season, the field reverts to its typical 64-team pool that includes three teams that CBU has already faced this season. Grand Canyon, UC Irvine, Oregon State are all potential repeat opponents for the Lancers as all four squads begin the tournament in the same bracket. CBU took the win over UCI in overtime earlier this season, but fell to Oregon State in Corvallis and went 0-3 against the Lopes.
