Softball Sweeps Home Opening Doubleheader
3/2/2022 10:11:00 PM | Softball
Maile Olsen recorded multi-hit games in both ends of the doubleheader, finishing the night going 5-for-6 with three runs batted in, a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases. Her three hits and two doubles in game one were single-game bests for Olsen, whose bat has come alive lately with a four-game hit streak.
Makayla Jordan brought the power, sending her third home run out of right center, bouncing it off the top of the fence before going over. Jordan leads the Lancers in homers this season, and is tied with Amanda Argomaniz for the RBI lead as both have an even dozen so far. Argomaniz added a pair today in game one when she went 2-for-3.
Both starting pitchers went the distance against USD with Alyssa Argomaniz getting the ball for game one, taking a one-hitter into the top of the seventh. She finished the game with a three-hit win, allowing just two runs while striking out four Toreros.
Jazmine Castaneda started the second bout and was dealing all game long. Castaneda gave up one early run on a fluky infield pop-up and a second in the top of the seventh, but in between she struck out more hitters than any Lancer pitcher in a single game so far this year. Her final stat line read an impressive seven innings, six hits, two earned runs and 10 strikeouts.
Defensively, the Lancers made more than a few highlight-reel catches. Amanda Argomaniz snow-coned a soft pop fly behind first base. Nicole Stark made a leaping catch in foul territory to help end the fifth inning, but a Jordan diving catch on the right field warning track of game two likely takes the cake.

GAME ONE
CBU scored early and often to start the day, beginning with an Olsen RBI double in the bottom of the second. CBU would tack on four more in the third inning, taking advantage of a USD error that allowed hits from Argomaniz and Olsen to plate a pair each. Scoring capped for CBU in the sixth as Shelby Arbeiter collected her third pinch-hit RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Alyssa Argomaniz managed to keep the game mostly contained to the infield, inducing 15 outs on the dirt. Argomaniz is putting together a fantastic sophomore campaign, dropping her season ERA to 2.84, having reduced that average in nine-straight appearances.
GAME TWO
The nightcap started off even hotter for CBU at the plate, as it scored all five runs in the second, third and fourth innings. An early error allowed the Lancers to tie the game at one after the Toreros took an early lead in the top of the second.
Extra-base hits accounted for the rest of the CBU scoring, as Katelyn Mangrello recorded her third double of the year, scoring Olsen and pinch runner Michaila Harrington to give the Lancers the lead. Jordan's third home run of the year followed in the fourth, scoring Mia Alvarez along the way.

Castaneda was dialed in from the first pitch, striking out the side in the top of the first. She would strike out at least one batter in all but one inning, and slammed the door on any comeback hopes by USD when she finished the game with three-straight swinging strikeouts.
UP NEXT
This weekend will provide the Inland Empire with as much action as it can handle as CBU hosts the first of two consecutive weekend tournaments in conjunction with UC Riverside. The Lancers will welcome CSUN, North Dakota State, Oregon State and Sacred Heart to Funk Stadium, playing each of them at least once. In total, Funk Stadium will host nine games this weekend.
