Castillo's Two-Hit Night Leads CBU Against Grand Canyon

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball continued its first Western Athletic Conference series of the season versus Grand Canyon on Saturday night at Totman Stadium.

A hot start pushed the Lopes to an 10-3 victory over the Lancers. GCU moves to 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in WAC play, while CBU is now 7-2, 0-2. The Lancers and Lopes will wrap up their WAC-opening series on Sunday at noon back at Totman Stadium.

Chad Castillo went 2-for-4 with a double. Ulises Caballero had CBU's big hit of the night with a two-RBI double, while Jake Skipworth, Russell Stevenson, Grady Tuohy and Reeve Holley all had hits in the game.

Pitching wise, Brandon Downer was the standout for the Lancers. He held GCU to two runs and struck out five over 3.1 innings.

Grand Canyon jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the second and fourth. There was no quit in CBU, as it responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.

Skipworth and Stevenson started the inning with back-to-back, one-out singles. The bases were loaded on a walk to David Martin and Caballero scored two with a double to left field. Tuohy then scored Martin with a bunt single.
