RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball made quick work of Utah Valley, as it posted a 12-2, run-rule victory over the Wolverines in less than an hour and 45 minutes on Sunday.
The Lancers hit five home runs in the game, with one each from Chad Castillo, Mitchel Simon, Josiah Chavez, Michael Carpentier and Connor Clift. It wrapped up the Western Athletic Conference West Division series win for CBU, which is no 25-12 overall and 11-7 in WAC play, while UVU drops to 15-25, 8-13.
California Baptist's offense went off for 15 hits in seven innings and Castillo and Chavez tied with a team-high three. Castillo also had four runs batted in and Carpentier had three RBI.
David Martin, Harrison Spohn and Simon each had two hits. Martin extended his hitting streak to 18 games this season to set a new NCAA-era best for the Lancers. Carpentier has an 11-game hitting streak of his own.
Drew Necochea earned the win on the mound for CBU as he gave up just two runs on five hits, no walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Spencer Bengard threw a perfect two innings in relief while Seth Mattox tossed a scoreless frame in the seventh.
The Lancers will hit the road again next week when they play a three-game WAC series at Sacramento State. The week begins with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 29, continues Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. and ends Sunday, May 1 at noon.
