CBU Resumes Mid-Week Play at UNLV

LAS VEGAS – California Baptist University baseball struck first but could not hold off a strong UNLV squad in a 7-4 loss on Tuesday.

The Lancers scored the first three runs of the game, but the Rebels scored seven straight to take the game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. UNLV improves to 30-16 this season and still leads the Mountain West Conference standings at 17-7, while CBU moves to 26-15 on the year.

CBU got two-hit games from Harrison Spohn and Jake Skipworth, while David Martin recorded a hit in his final at-bat in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak. Martin now has a base hit in the last 22 games to tie for the second-longest streak in the Lancers' modern era. Aaron Seuss holds the record at 35 games, while Luke Esquerra and Matt Price also had 22-game hitting streaks in 2013 and 2003, respectively.

CBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on four hits and an error in the third inning. Jake Skipworth and CJ Masciel singled on back-to-back pitches to put two on with one out. A throwing error on a pick-off attempt scored Skipworth and put Masciel on third.

David Martin scored a run with a grounder up the middle and singles from Harrison Spohn and Chad Castillo led to the third run. Spohn stole second and then came home on the RBI single from Castillo.

UNLV scored the next seven runs, with one in the third, four in the fourth and two in the sixth.

CBU made things interesting late and put its first two runners on board in the top of the eighth after singles from Martin and Spohn, but came up empty in the inning. Connor Clift hit a lead-off, pinch-hit home run in the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Lancers return home to host NM State this weekend. The Western Athletic Conference West Division series begins, Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m., continues Saturday, May 7, at 5 p.m. and ends Sunday, May 8, at noon.
