RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University's women's soccer team hosted UC Riverside for the third installment of the Crosstown Showdown Thursday night, as the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
It was another packed-out crowd at the CBU Soccer Stadium, as a program-best 921 fans watched the highest-scoring game of the season. The Lancers move to 2-1-2 on the season, while the Highlanders stand at 2-2-2. CBU and UCR's all-time series in the Crosstown Showdown now stands at 1-1-1.
UC Riverside was the first to strike on the night, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute with a low shot to the left side. The Highlanders extended their lead to 2-0 seven minutes later after Alexandra Hargrave recorded her second goal of the night.
It didn't take long for the Lancers to respond, though, as the Lancers were able to secure a corner kick three minutes later. Morgan Witz played a ball into the middle of the box, and after a Highlander header pushed the ball outside of the box, Karley Weeks delivered an unbelievable strike to the top of the crossbar that bounced straight down into the net. It marked Weeks' first goal of the season.
The Weeks' goal gave the Lancers the momentum they needed, as the ball remained on the offensive side for the next 13 minutes. CBU was able to pour in four more shots before Deniah Wells stole the ball after a misplay by a Highlander defender. Wells took the one-on-one opportunity and beat the UCR keeper and another defender to record the equalizer at the 42nd minute.
CBU came out of the break picking up from where it left off, as Weeks hit a rocket of a shot way outside the box for the go-ahead goal three minutes into the second half.
The Highlanders were able to answer back in the 64th minute to knot the game up at 3-3.
CBU and UCR both finished with 14 shots on the night, as the Lancers recorded seven corner kicks to the Highlanders' four.
Noa Schumacher went all 90 minutes for the Lancers between the sticks, recording four saves on the night. Weeks secured the season's first brace for the Lancers and moved into second all-time in career multi-goal games in the NCAA Division I era.
