Water Polo Opens 2023 Season with A Friday Split, Defeats Biola for First Win of the Year

TEMPE, AZ - California Baptist University women's water polo earned new head coach Julie Snodgrass her first victory as the Lancer skipper, defeating Biola 16-10 in the second game of Friday's season-opening doubleheader. In the early game, CBU took on #10 Arizona State in their home pool, falling 17-5. The Lancers begin the season at 1-1 with two more games to be played in the desert on Saturday.
Jamie Hutton led the way with five goals on opening day, highlighted by a hat trick against Biola. Anielysa Mena, Madeline Schwegler, Abby Mammen, and Emaly Hutton all recorded a pair of goals on the day with the newest Hutton claiming the only multi-assist game of the day for the Lancers. Freshman goalkeeper Tyanna Schneider answered the call for CBU today in the net, stopping 17 shots total.
GAME ONE: ASU 17 - CBU 5
CBU came up short in the pool to the tenth-ranked Sun Devils 17-5. Freshman goalkeeper Tyanna Schneider in her first action as a Lancer, recorded ten saves and even had a goal attempt.
Graduate Student Jamie Hutton had two goals in the match, joining teammates Melinna Galbraith, Rayne Lopez, and Emaly Hutton, who all chipped in one goal. Lopez had 100% save percentage to go along with a steal.
GAME TWO: CBU 16 - Biola 10
The second match of the ASU Cross Conference, Showdown versus Biola, faired much better as they took the game 16-10. The Lancers and the Eagles went back and forth through three quarters, with CBU holding a narrow one-point lead into the final quarter. CBU scored six goals in the final frame to the Eagles one to secure their victory.
Schneider added seven more saves to her tournament total and added a goal. Nine Lancers scored in the match and were led by Jamie Hutton, who had three on 43% shooting. Freshman Morgan Gates knocked in 3 goals on 60% shooting with an assist.
After having no assists in the previous match against Arizona State, CBU recorded eight assists against the Eagles. Emaly Hutton was the only Lancers to record multiple assists with two. As a team, the Lancers shot 49% and had six steals to nab their first victory of the season.
Next up, the Lancers will continue to compete in the ASU Cross Conference Showdown with matches against the University of Michigan and Azusa Pacific at 9 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. in Tempe.
