TEMPE – Opening weekend to the 2023 women's water polo season is in the books. The California Baptist University squad returns with a 2-2 record after falling first to No. 7 Michigan 16-5 before bouncing back with a 7-5 win over Azusa.
After four games, the Lancers' leading scorer is no surprise, as Jamie Hutton paces the pack with five, including the season's first hat trick against Biola on Friday. Emaly Hutton is just one goal behind at five, with Cayliegh Carter closing in with four.
GAME ONE – MICHIGAN 16 – CBU 5
Carter started the day strong with a pair of scores against the seventh-ranked team in the nation. E. Hutton, Abby Mammen, and Melinna Galbraith also chipped in goals.
The Lancers closed the first quarter well, scoring the final two goals to make it a 4-2 game, but a five-goal second period for Michigan ultimately put things out of reach for the Lancers.
Tyanna Schneider and Kayla Demski split time between the pipes for CBU, with Schneider making seven stops and Demski coming up with two in her Lancer debut.
GAME TWO – CBU 7 - AZUSA 5
The final game in the tournament for the Lancers could not have started much better as CBU blanked Azusa in the first quarter to take an early 3-0 lead. The Cougars flipped the script on the Lancers in the second quarter, shutting out the Lancers and managing to take back two of those goals.
CBU scored the third period's only goal on Mammen's second of the day. The third quarter was a relative barnburner as both teams scored three times to reach the final score of 7-5 in favor of CBU.
Seven different Lancers scored all seven goals in this one, including repeats from Mammen, Carter, and E. Hutton and singles from J. Hutton, Celeste Almendariz, Jenna Dickstein, and Morgan Gates. Schneider again protected the cage, blocking a career-high 12 Cougar attempts to finish the tournament with a total of 35 stops.
The Lancers now prepare for the Long Beach State Mini, a one-day tournament that will pit them against No. 20 Loyola Marymount and Division III No. 7 La Verne on Saturday, January 21, at 11:45 a.m. and 4:25 p.m., respectively.
