Lancers Cap Conference Season with No Losses
10/22/2023 12:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ABILENE, TX--- California Baptist ended Western Athletic Conference regular season play on Sunday morning with a 3-0 victory over Abilene Christian to finish their conference slate with no losses. The Lancers improved to a 6-0-3 conference record and currently sit first in the WAC standings with 21 points. However, Utah Valley (20 points) will finish their conference slate on Monday evening to determine the final regular season champions and official tournament seeding.
""Our staff couldn't be more proud of this team. To go undefeated in conference play and earn a first round bye is a very difficult task in such a strong conference as the WAC. We've said it all year this is a special group, from the players to our staff.
This team broke a program record for 15 games unbeaten straight from 2012," remarked Kristen St. Clair. "We ended conference play with a strong 3-0 performance today. I thought the first couple of minutes were a little hectic but we did a good job settling down and focusing on our execution. All of our goals were well executed."
A 15-game unbeaten streak is no easy feat, but St. Clair's squad has been impeccable this season and boasts just a single loss in their 11-1-6 overall record. The Lancer's defense has been top-notch all year, and it was proved again on Sunday morning. After a competitive first 30 minutes against the Wildcats, CBU found the back of the net off a freekick from Taylor Summit after Jayden Ramirez tapped in her fifth goal of the season. Not even three minutes later would Jana Heinen score a freekick from nearly 50 yards out, netting the ball in the top right corner for a spectacular finish.
CBU held the Wildcats scoreless through 90 minutes for their eighth shutout of the season. Noa Schumacher made one save, and the California Baptist defense limited ACU to just three shots. Heinen would seal the match with another freekick in the 82nd minute that sailed over the Wildcat's 18-yard box and was mistakenly kicked in the goal by an ACU defender. The 3-0 win for CBU comes at a crucial time for St. Clair's team, as they could still earn a share of the WAC regular season title if Utah Valley ties or loses on Monday evening. Either way, the victory in Abilene was an excellent way to end the regular season and could give the Lancers the momentum they will need for a deep run in the WAC Tournament at the end of October.
"Taylor once again provided great service into the box, Jayden did a great job attacking the space and redirecting the ball on goal. For the second goal Jana hit a world class shot from distance into the upper net. What a goal! The third goal was a product of our strong numbers crashing the box to keep the ball on frame," continued St. Clair.
"Everyone played a key role for us today. We've gone through our share of injuries this year however I've been really impressed how we have responded as a team and different players have stepped up. Now we return home to rest, recover and begin preparations for the WAC tournament," finished St. Clair.
The Lancers will return to Riverside to host the Western Athletic Conference Tournament from October 29th through November 4th. Seeding and the official bracket with game times will be finalized after the conclusion of the Utah Valley versus Southern Utah match on Monday, October 23rd.
