Leo Mendez Earns WAC & National Honors After GCU Game

RIVERSIDE - After leading California Baptist men's soccer to a 3-0 victory over Grand Canyon on Sunday, senior striker Leo Mendez has been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. His brace plus an assist garnered attention from outside the conference, being named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Men's National Team of the Week.
The WAC award is Mendez's first weekly distinction from the conference but adds to his growing league recognition list after receiving WAC All-Tournament honors last season. Mendez's 12 points this season (four goals, four assists) currently rank him fourth in the WAC in points and goals and third in assists. Despite only playing in one conference game while most of the WAC has a pair of games under their belts, Leo leads the WAC in conference goals per game with two and points with five.
He also gained national recognition from two of the country's top college soccer media outlets, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer. Each site pulls data and results from all across Division I to pick an 11-man team for the week who played key roles in the success of their team. Mendez is only the second Lancer to receive both WAC and College Soccer News & Top Drawer Soccer honors in the same week.
The team will be back on home pitch for their only game this week, hosting UTRGV on Thursday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m.
