DAVIS, CALIF. – California Baptist University women's water polo opened tournament number four of the season by splitting Saturday's doubleheader against No. 4 Cal and La Verne. The Golden Bears lived up to their ranking, dispatching the Lancers 19-5 in the first game of the day before CBU throttled La Verne 25-13 in the second game.
Emaly Hutton led all Lancers on the day with eight points (six goals and two assists). Older sister Jamie was next on the day's scoring list with four goals, and Melinna Galbraith added three goals and an assist. Dora Lehoczky and Kyndall Burrell netted three goals each.
GAME ONE: CAL 19 – CBU 5
The tournament opener began with Cal leading just 2-1 halfway through the first period. They would quickly turn on the jets and score seven straight to end the first and start the second before going into halftime up 10-2. The Golden Bear defense was stingy in the third, allowing zero CBU goals before the Lancers closed the fourth quarter with three.
Tyanna Schneider and Kayla Demski split time in the cage against the Bears. Schneider faired better between the two, getting the start and stopping four first-half shots along with a steal.
GAME TWO: CBU 25 – LA VERNE 13
The script flipped in game two as the Lancers opened on a scoring tear as the first ten CBU goals were scored by ten different players. E. Hutton had a single-game-high six points, tucking away five goals and providing one assist. J. Hutton (four goals), Galbraith (three), Lehoczy (three), Burrell (three), Taylor Frandsen (two), and Rayne Lopez (two) all collected multiple goals against the Jaguars.
Scheider and Demski again split time between the pipes. Demski played three-quarters of the game, stopping a trio of shots along the way.
The Lancers now stand at 6-7 on the season, with another doubleheader scheduled for Sunday. Big game Sunday begins with a tilt against No. 19 San Jose State before closing the tournament against host and 17th-ranked UC Davis. Game times are set for 10:40 a.m. and 3:20 p.m., respectively.
