CBU faces College World Series Finalist Oklahoma on Opening Day in Norman
2/17/2023 3:56:00 PM | Baseball
The Sooners were finalists in the College World Series last season against Ole Miss Rebels and return twelve letterwinners from that squad.
Michael Carpentier opened the 2023 season with the first hit of the new year in the top of the first inning on a single to left field. The Lancers wasted no time, striking first in the opening frame with a sacrificed fly by Mitchell Simon that brought home Dusty Garcia. The Sooners would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 1-1.

The Sooners captured the lead with a solo home run and two more manufactured runs in the bottom of fourth. The Lancers had two hits in the sixth inning by Simon and Connor Mcguire, but could not cash in when the bases were loaded.
In his first appearance as a Lancer, Julian Alvarez had an opening-day home run for CBU on a solo shot to right field. Alvarez, a Riverside City College transfer, brought the score to 4-2 at the top of the seventh inning.

Liam Rocha impressed in four innings of relief, striking and no hits allowed. Rocha faced 13 batters needing just 70 total pitches to do his work. Six different Lancers had hits in the game, with shortstop Josh Paino colleting a pair of stolen bases on opening day.
The Lancers will continue their opening series with the Sooners on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon Pacific.
