Lancer's Sixth Inning Rally Collects Conference Opening Win

EDINBURG--- The Lancers headed to the University of Texas Rio Grande to face off against the Vaqueros in their first Western Athletic Conference series of the year. California Baptist went down behind the Vaqueros in the fifth inning, but a four-run rally in the sixth inning earned the Lancers their first WAC win of the season.
The Navy and Gold tallied the first run of the game in their first at-bat after Garret Ostrander doubled to right field and Julian Alvarez scored. The Vaqueros quickly tied the game in the bottom of the second and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning off a two-run home run.
California Baptist entered the sixth inning strong, with CJ Masciel starting off with a single to left field. Julian Alvarez battled well in the batter's box and came out with a walk. Ostrander stepped up and delivered a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. After Masciel scored on a Vaquero wild pitch, Mitchel Simon's double sent Alvarez home and a Skipworth single would also score Simon. The Lancer's four-run rally ended with a single from Josiah Chavez that brought home the run from Skipworth.
After a three-up three-down seventh inning from Brandon Downer, California Baptist returned in the top of the eighth with another strong offensive inning. Skipworth collected another hit with a double to right field and Josh Paino sent home with a single to right field, securing the sixth and final run of the game.
Skipworth had himself a night in Edinburg, tallying two hits, two runs, 11 putouts, and an RBI. Starting pitcher Liam Rocha finished the evening with five strikes and Brandon Downer only allowed two hits, both helping secure the first WAC win of the season.
