ST.GEORGE, UTAH – California Baptist University softball returns home from their final road trip of the regular season, having nearly ended the trip with an impressive victory over the conference-leading Trailblazers. Instead, it was Utah Tech, behind a late rally to score four in the final two innings, taking the Saturday series finale by a score of 7-6.
The Lancers flipped the script in game three, putting up a monster five-run inning in the top of the first, batting around the order, and giving freshman starter Carly Limosnero a comfortable lead before having to throw her first pitch. Small-ball produced big results as three of the four Lancer balls in play that scored runs did not leave the infield. The Trailblazers got back a pair of those runs in their half of the frame, but CBU limited the damage. The Lancers would add one more to their lead in the top of the fourth as heads-up baserunning from pinch runner Riley McDaniel allowed her to score easily on an errant throw from the Trailblazer catcher.
The Trailblazers' leadoff hitter would tack on one more in the bottom of the fourth, but Limosnero would induce a pair of easy groundouts and a flyout to stifle UT once again. The freshman would be done after that, putting in four strong innings of work, allowing three earned on six hits.
Alyssa Argomaniz came in at the start of the fifth in relief of Limosnero. Argomaniz would handle UT for the most part for 2.1 innings before back-to-back walks in the bottom of the seventh forced another change in the circle, this time going to Jazmine Castaneda. The Trailblazers would patiently walk the bases loaded and walk it off with a two-out, bases-clearing double.
CBU falls to 25-21 with a 9-9 record in the Western Athletic Conference and will close out the regular season with three-straight home series. First up, a non-conference tilt against the WCC's Saint Mary's Gaels. That doubleheader is set for Monday, April 24, at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m.
