SAN DIEGO – The Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Championship began on Friday as the eight teams battled it out for Saturday seeding. California Baptist University entered the tournament as the 8-seed scheduled to face top-seeded Fresno State. The Lancers opened the game strong, but the Bulldogs eventually showed why they were the top seed with a 14-9 win.
Cayleigh Carter led CBU with a hat trick on the day, throwing in an assist for good measure. Jamie Hutton and Morgan Gates each netted a pair, and Maddie Schwegler and Taylor Frandsen capped the scoring with one apiece.
The Lancers played the 'Dogs to a 6-4 first quarter, allowing that final goal with just a second left. Fresno State flexed on defense for the next 16 minutes, allowing just one CBU goal in each of the following two periods. The Lancers netted three in the final frame, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs took the five-goal victory.
The Lancers will now face 7-seed Santa Clara in the 7th place game on Saturday morning, beginning the second day of action with the 10:00 a.m. game time.
