CBU Secures Series in Hit Fest Against Hornets
5/14/2023 12:23:00 AM | Baseball
The Lancers struck first with a single run in the first inning, courtesy of a solo homer by Dustin Garcia. The Hornets responded in the fourth inning with their own three-run shot and an RBI double for a 4-1 lead. Shayne Simpson kicked off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run which was followed by a two-run homer by Connor McGuire to tie the game at four. Dustin Garcia kept the inning going with his second home run of the night, launching a solo shot 474 feet for the longest home run this season and tallying his sixteenth homer of the year. The Lancers added another pair of runs for a 7-4 lead with an RBI double from Mitchel Simon and an RBI single from Michael Carpentier.
Sacramento State hit another solo shot in the fifth inning and tallied two more runs in the seventh to tie the game at seven, but a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth by the Lancers would ultimately earn them the game. Nicholas Dumesnil crossed home plate off of Garcia's bunt, and Garret Ostrander would earn an RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored McGuire. Simon then hit the seventh home run of the evening for two runs just before Jake Skipworth brought home Josh Paino with a single.
Garcia led offensively for CBU, generating two home runs, three RBI, and three hits from the box. Simon ended the evening with two hits and three RBI, while McGuire collected two hits and two RBI against the Hornet's pitching staff. Spencer Bengard earned his fifth win of the season, entering for the final three innings and throwing five strikeouts.
The Lancers return on Sunday for their final home game at Totman Stadium this season, celebrating Senior Day and looking for a sweep starting at noon.
